Chennai: Well known Tamil film director Balu Mahendra today died at a city hospital here after suffering a massive cardiac attack.
According to sources, he was admitted in Vijaya Hospital yesterday and his condition turned critical today morning.
The veteran director was among the a pioneer in Indian cinema and is also a screenwriter, editor and cinematographer. Sources say that the ace director was in highly critical stage.
The entire film fraternity was shocked to here about his demise. Further details are awaited.
Balu Mahendra has won five National Film Awards—two for cinematography, three Filmfare Awards South and numerous state awards from the governments of Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The ace director, started his career as a cinematographer with 'Nellu' in 1974 and soon made his directional debut in a few years through Kokila, a Kannada film.
